CAPE TOWN, 24 OCTOBER, 2019 – International specialist maxillofacial and oral surgeons will meet from today at the Cape Town International Convention Centre for the annual SASMFOS Congress 2019. The annual congress is organised by the South African Society of Maxillofacial and Oral Surgeons (SASMFOS) and hosted in conjuction with international partners, British Association of Oral Maxillofacial Surgeons (BAOMS), Australia New Zealand Association of Oral Maxillofacial Surgeons (ANZAOMS), and the African division of the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathologists (IAOP).
“We are delighted to welcome delegates to the annual SASMFOS Congress 2019. As a specialist medical society, we acknowledge the growing demands to serve our patients, hospitals and funders, it is critical that we build on our local and international networks to find new perspectives and innovative solutions for our members,” says Dr Frits Hoogendijk, President of SASMFOS.
Hoogendijk adds that the congress aims to establish an engaging global platform for specialist maxillofacial and oral surgeons, to discuss new innovative trends, funding concerns and to find new ways of partnering with a global network that will add value to better serve patients, hospitals and funders.
This year’s congress will officially be opened by SASMFOS, BAOMS, ANZAOMS and the IAOP. The diverse group of presenters and speakers are represented by both SASMFOS and the IAOP.
Some key highlights on this year’s programme include abstracts delving deeper into various critical issues and findings concerning head and neck malignancy, reconstruction, alternative reconstruction, complex dental implant reconstruction, orthognathics, craniofacial and clefts, pathology and ethics, temporomandibular joint (TMJ), and a variety lectures on diverse topics.
“We have also included a session to unpack SASMFOS ethics. The session will feature Dr Loz Newman who will present an abstract on Maxillofacial Medicolegal Misdemeanours, followed by dentolegal advisor Dr Alasdair McKelvie who will present two abstracts, one on Claims drivers of claims and regulatory investigations and the second on Indemnity/insurance and how they work and are priced,” says Dr Frits Hoogendijk who will close-off the session with his presentation of Ethical use of coding and its correct use in OMS.
The programme extends beyond the everyday practice, and seeks to explore case studies where the profession may partner or add value outside of the norm. Dr Gerhard Steenkamp, a world renonwned veterinary dentist and maxillofacial surgeon who is passionate about conservation in Africa, will present his view on the history of veterinary dentistry and its growth, with particular emphasis on wild animals.
Dr Satyesh Parmar is the President of the British Association of Oral Maxillofacial Surgeons (BOAMS) and says that the not-for-profit society looks forward to being a part of the congress in 2019. “As a non-profit society serving our members, BOAMS seeks to promote the advancement of education, research and the development of maxillofacial and oral surgery, not only in the British Isles, but to also build parnerships with global societies. The annual SASMFOS Congress brings together specialists from around the world, sharing clinical and scientific information,” says Parmar who will also be presenting at the congress alongside other members from BOAMS.
